End of Season

The NASCAR season is over and the sad truth has come out....the Princess did not win. It is a sad, sad world when the BIGGEST fan comes in FOURTH! And let the trash talking begin now, because I am going to kick some patootie next year, so watch out!

Phoenix

You're wondering how close our family fantasy picks' race has gotten.

There is only one more race until the Chase winner is declared. It is still up for grabs for Hamlin, Johnson and Harvick. And because last week's family contest was so close, I decided to amp up the anticipation by not announcing the scores for Phoenix. Although scores have been recorded on the chart, I do not know who is in first, second, etc. place. Next week I will score the same way, not tallying up the scores.

We will all be together on Thanksgiving, and that is where the winner will be announced. Those of us who do not come in first can console ourselves by eating too much dinner and way too much dessert.

Texas Tantrums

Fighting and fingers and sudden crew changes were the surprises of the day.
Is it too late to propose a consolation prize for the last place finisher?

Recap

This Nascar fantasy season has been better contested than I thought it would be. Early on it looked bad for anyone not named 1,2,Earnhardt,4 as I took an enormous lead and then, true to all of my fantasy seasons, I promptly threw it up all over my shoes. Easy come, easy go. For most of the season NASCorolla has had a monopoly on the pole spot overall. Weekly winners are only fairly spread out. I say only fairly because T-Money has failed to show up on victory lane so far. NASCorolla, Daisy Mae and Princess A are all tied for the most #1 finishes, with 6. Last place finishes are a little more evenly distributed, with everyone except NASCorolla owning 5 cabooses. Last place must smell bad because NASCorolla does not like going there – only 2 epic failures so far this year for NASCARolla.

So with 10 races left, who has a realistic shot at the champeenship? Here are the average totals:

NASCorolla

656

1,2,Earnhardt,4

653

Daisy Mae

650

Princess A

647

Billy Bob

644

Zeeee

No surprise here. They play out how the overall standings are. If everyone continues to post their ‘average’ total, the standings stay the same.

To me, so far the story of the season has been what I call ‘The woodshed’. The woodshed is where you get taken when it’s time for a whuppin’. There are just two people there, the whupper and whuppee. Taking people to the woodshed is the only way to make any real gains. If you get taken to the woodshed a lot, then you probably aren’t very good. Going out the woodshed a lot means your team is volatile, which is definitely a good thing. You want wild swings in the score. Scoring somewhere in the middle isn’t going to cut it.

How do you get taken out behind the woodshed? Get beaten by more than 150 points. Any week where the gap between #1 and #6 is more than 150 is a woodshedding. The all-time worst woodshedding was week #1 with Daisy Mae on the wrong end to the tune of 280 points, courtesy of Princess A. Daisy Mae is tied on the list for the team owner who has been taken out there most often. Also on that list are Princess A and NASCorolla. Don’t feel too bad though - Daisy Mae is also the co-leader of the most frequent woodshed-giver. NASCorolla is the co-owner of the Queen of the ‘shed title. Do those names sound familiar? They should – they are the #1 and #3 teams right now. In fact the last three woodsheddings were all handed out by Daisy Mae, all in the last 5 weeks. This is how she has been able to start her improbable run near the top after spending so much time in the cellar.

Is team Daisy Mae too hot? As NASCorolla has shown, a steady hand on the tiller makes for a winning strategy. Daisy Mae is smoking hot right now, but as last week shows she could just as easily cool off with a few mistimed picks. Hoping to steal some NASCorolla thunder, Billy Bob has also stuck with the same drivers. With the exception of last week though, his set of drivers has not shown as much staying power. If he wants to win he will need to make some changes at some point. Zeeee – what can I say? You’re out of it. Start saving up for the season ending dinner. Princess A has a dark horse shot at winning. There are enough races left to make a run, but she needs to post some #1’s soon. 1,2,Earnhardt, 4 has too many 2-3 finishes and not enough 1-2 finishes. Unless he bottles some ‘shed magic, there’s not enough stank in the tank for him. It’s going to come down to Daisy Mae and NASCorolla in a nail biter.

Brickyard Blues

What was that???!!! It's not over until the checkered flag waves, but hope springs eternal until that last moment. A bad decision in the last few laps changed the face of the race in a big way. There was some shouting at the TV in this household, and possibly in yours.

Who is in the lead? Overall, the same player as last week. Weekly? Read on.

Chicago

This one was worth staying up for for several reasons, but mostly since Reutimann won. It's always good when a winning crew chief cries. This week the weekly and the new total points' winner are one and the same. This player has stayed with the same drivers for all 19 weeks, something no one else can claim.

Duped by Daytona!

In an exciting turn of events, many of our drivers were involved in a spectacular late race wreck. I wish I had seen it. The rain delay was too much for me and I went to sleep, so I have to take NASCAR.com's word for it. With a last-minute change of driver who happened to win, one player has tied for first for the week. Read on...

Sonoma

Maybe on Fathers' Day the father in the group should have won for the week, but he tied for second. Our weekly points' leader is a repeat, as is the total points' leader. All players have broken 10,000 points - yay - and there is a growing gap between first and last place. Will that gap close? Will the person who has been in last place for 16 races ever reach second to last place? Stay tuned for next Sunday at Loudon where anything can happen.

Oh No, Pocono!

What an exciting left turn of events! Late cautions and a spectacular wreck, courtesy of Kasey Kahne, made or mutilated the day for many of our boys. The total points' leader remains unchanged, but there is a different weekly points' leader (she said with no humility).

There is a tie for second place. One of the players has had the same drivers since Race #1. The other recently made changes that mimicked those drivers. There is also a tie for third place (if second place is held by two players). The third place players have done some minor switching recently and now have the same drivers.

Between first and last place, there is a 421 point spread. Last place doesn't have a chance of overtaking first, but there is a still plenty of time to shrink the lead. Isn't there??? We witnessed last night that running over other teams' crew members is not the way to do it so we'll have to try something else. Like winning races, and lots of them.

Thunder Valley/The World's Fastest Half Mile

Bristol is one of the most exciting, infuriating, frustrating, and heartbreaking races of the season. It's a blast to watch unless your drivers wreck.

The scorekeepers will be unable to score the race until Monday. This is bad news for some.

And the next week? Martinsville? There's probably going to be a delay in reporting the standings for that race, too. Builds the tension a little.

Anybody changing drivers? Email Princess A.

Good luck, teams!

Subterfuge and Secret Weapons

Richard's story took place long ago. His family earned its living by farming and after his father died, it was little "Richie" who would drive the family farm cart to market. It is said he was an excellent driver and especially adept at getting the family cart where it needed to go with incredible speed. This helped his family survive and prosper during harvest time. Eventually, Richard's cart racing days came to an end and he enrolled at Oxford University where he once again excelled, only this time academically! Richard studied hard; he put "the pedal to the metal" when it came to pursuing higher learning. It seemed his mind was always racing. He became the Chancellor of Oxford and was responsible for the fine tuning of quick young minds. He became a parish priest and was elected Bishop of Chichester, though rivals opposed his victory. He lived his life simply and was known for being extremely accessible to all who sought his help. During times of famine, Richard became unpopular with others because he insisted on giving generously to the poor, infirm and all those truly needy. During his final years he lived unselfishly and led a movement that allowed others to succeed. He then had his opportunity to visit Heaven. Saint Richard was a selfless soul whose mind was always spinning `round and `round. Richard selflessly found ways to help all of the members of his team who sought spiritual safety and success by honoring greater powers.

Does anyone else think 1,2,Earnhardt,4 should have mentioned that he has a Saint in his corner? Richard, the Patron Saint of NASCAR, Race Car Drivers and their fans.

I call it downright sneaky.

What is best in life?

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!

Good thing everyone gets a week to rest. I can't take the weeping anymore. Some mocked the Harvick selection, and while not as nice as Biffle, having the 2nd best pick this sad week ain't bad. Sharpen those pencils for Bristol. You don't want this train getting any more momentum... woo wooo!!!

You win some, lose some, and wreck some.

Dale Earnhardt, I may be in last place, but that's going to change. One of the teams made a grave error in judgment this week, and it will haunt that team until Christmas. Maybe even until New Years'.

Do you smell what The Rock is cookin' ?

Smell that? Burning Goodyears and Sunoco 260 GTX 98-octane, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of melted rubber and gasoline in the morning. You know, one time they held a race in Las Vegas. When it was all over, one guy picked the top two and 4 in the top 11. No one else was even close. The smell, you know that acrid, fumey smell. The whole place. Smelled like…

Victory. 2 weeks in a row. 33 weeks to go. Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.

Changes can be made until the Green Flag on Sunday.

NASCorolla, you will be as happy as I to learn that Carl Edwards' daughter, Annie, was born this week so Carl will not have to jump out of the car during the race to help his wife breathe.

Tighten Those Seatbelts One More Time...

Time for me to trade two non-performers for some tried and true racers.

I let you all get a head start with the points to lull you into a sense of security, but Sunday morning you'd better take your Dramamine because your heads will be spinning when you watch my pix race by the field.

How long is the season again?

I'm starting to have serious doubts about my method for picking my drivers.

But I have no better ideas so I'm sticking with them, for better or for worse, etc.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

And the crowd goes wild!!!!

So the princess takes the lead! That's what you all get for picking Jimmie Johnson!! Can the trash talking start now?

Week 1 Scores - The Longest Daytona in History

Remember, you aren't stuck with the same drivers, and don't count out Clint Bowyer.

Here are the scores for the first race, in order of highest to lowest:

1. Princess A - 694
2. 1, 2, Earnhardt, 4 - 629
3. Billy Bob - 581
4. Zeeee - 552
5. NASCorolla - 500
6. Daisy Mae - 414

And there IS crying in NASCAR, but it is more attractive on the drivers than on the Fantasy Pix players.

Just wait 'til next week.

ch-ch-ch-changes

Clint Bowyer is off my list, and Marcos Ambrose is on. Let the best man win!

Cheating 101 with Professor Knaus

Picking Jimmie Johnson is risky; his crew chief is at the top of the cheatasaurus list, and it would be a tragedy if Jimmie were parked because of another infraction.

Sandbags?

Do the other drivers have to put sandbags in their cars so they all weigh as much a Tony Stewart and not have an unfair advantage?
